Brief summary of venue

A multi-pitch trad climbing area with 39 climbs from grade 16 upwards in a pristine bushveld area with excellent hiking possible in the hills and gullies over the entire north and south range.

Permit/ permission info

The area is owned by the SA National Defence Force and written permission from the army is required. Apply well in advance.

Approximate travelling time from Johannesburg

3 ½ hours to army gate and another ½ hour to the camp area. A car with good ground clearance is required; 4x4 is advisable but not essential.

Parking information

Car camping, so park next to tents at the campsite; parking is free of charge and safe.

Info on walk in

The walk from the camp to the base of the climbs takes between half an hour to an hour for most climbs. It is possible to drive some way towards climbs that are further away.


Bush camping next to cars. There are no facilities available, nor are there any camping or access fees charged.

Availability of water for drinking

All water to be brought in.

Climbing information

39 recorded multi-pitch trad climbs, ranging between grades 16 and 20 up 200 to 300 metre cliffs.  Climbing is mostly in the sun, but shade is possible.  Walk off via various gullies.

Lunch spots

Not relevant. Climbs are long – lunch will be taken on stances. If hiking any spot can be chosen. No problems with baboons or monkeys experienced.

Camping and hiking yes, climbing no.



Camp fires

Allowed at the camp site.

Other attractions

Pristine bushveld, with some game, as well as many birds and plants.


Absolutely safe as army territory is fenced in.
